Clinical coder: what the job is and how to get into it

5 min read

The job in one line

A clinical coder reads a patient's hospital record and turns it into standard codes.

Those codes are how a hospital stay becomes data. They feed hospital funding, government health statistics and research. If the code is wrong, the funding and the numbers are wrong too.

The full profile, with the ABS and Jobs and Skills Australia figures, is on the Clinical Coder role page.

What the work looks like

Most days follow the same pattern. You work through a queue of patient records, one hospital stay at a time.

For each one you read the clinical notes: discharge summaries, test results, theatre notes. You work out the main reason the person was in hospital, plus any complications or other conditions. Then you pick the right codes from the Australian classification systems, ICD-10-AM for diagnoses and ACHI for procedures.

When the notes are unclear, you may send a question to the doctor who wrote them. You check your own work, and auditors check it again. Most teams set a target for how many records you get through.

It is mostly desk work. It is quiet, detailed and steady.

Why admin and customer service people look at it

Clinical coding is one of the few health roles you can reach without clinical training. You are not treating anyone. You are reading, sorting and recording.

Skills that carry over:

  • Accuracy under a target. If you have worked a call queue with a quality score, you know the trade-off between speed and getting it right.
  • Reading closely. Policy documents, claim files and account notes train the same habit of reading every line.
  • Following rules that change. Coding rules are updated on a regular cycle. Admin workers already live with changing procedures.
  • Working on your own. Much of the day is you and the queue.

If you have worked as a medical receptionist or in health admin, the medical words may already be familiar. You still need to learn the coding rules from scratch.

How to get in

The qualification

Jobs and Skills Australia lists the Diploma of Clinical Coding (HLT50321) as the qualification that makes someone "occupation ready" for this role (JSA Training Occupation Pathways dataset, March 2026). JSA adds that "further training and experience may be required" for some employers.

The ABS places Clinical Coder at skill level 3: a Certificate IV, or a Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS OSCA 2024, version 1.0). The ABS lists no registration or licence for this occupation.

Before you pay for the course, check whether it is free or subsidised in your state at dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe. Compare courses and providers at yourcareer.gov.au. Ask each provider whether the course includes a work placement, because experience is often the hard part to get.

What the numbers say

  • It is a small occupation. About 1,700 people worked as clinical coders at the 2021 Census (ABS, 2021 Census, OSCA Experimental Estimates).
  • Employers found it hard to fill. Jobs and Skills Australia rated Clinical Coder in shortage nationally and in every state and territory on the 2025 Occupation Shortage List. That measures how hard employers found it to find suitable people. It does not count jobs.
  • Job ads were down. Online ads for the wider group of similar roles fell 8.7% in the 12 months to June 2026 (JSA Internet Vacancy Index, three-month rolling average).

So employers have struggled to find coders, but the number of ads is small and has dipped. Both things are true at once.

For pay, the role page shows the ABS median for the wider occupation group, with its source. Use it as a guide to what the work pays, not a promise of what you will earn.

The honest hard parts

It is detailed work, all day

The classification systems are large and change on a regular cycle. Errors affect hospital funding and data, so the work is checked. If repetitive, detailed work drains you, this may not suit you.

Notes are often messy

Doctors write in a hurry. You will often have to make a sound decision from incomplete notes, and be able to explain it.

AI is already in the room

The role page notes, from the JSA occupation profile, that AI-assisted coding tools are reducing manual effort in many teams, while quality checking and audit tend to stay with people. Go in expecting the job to shift toward checking and auditing over time.

The career ladder is short

Coders may move to senior coder or coding auditor roles. Some go on to Health Information Manager, which the ABS places at skill level 1: a bachelor degree or higher.

How to start

  1. See how close you are. Take the free career change check, or the two-minute clinical coder fit check to see how your skills line up.
  2. Read a few real job ads. Note what they ask for: the diploma, experience, or both.
  3. Check course costs and funding in your state before you enrol.
  4. Ask about placements. A course with a placement may make your first role easier to get.

Frequently asked questions

What qualification do you need to be a clinical coder in Australia?

Jobs and Skills Australia lists the Diploma of Clinical Coding (HLT50321) as the occupation-ready qualification. The ABS places the occupation at skill level 3, which is a Certificate IV or a Certificate III with on-the-job training.

Is clinical coding in shortage in Australia?

Yes, on the most recent list. Jobs and Skills Australia rated Clinical Coder in shortage nationally and in every state and territory on the 2025 Occupation Shortage List.

Do you need a nursing or medical background?

No. You need to learn medical terms and the coding rules, which the diploma covers. A health admin background can help with the terms, but everyone has to learn the coding rules.
