What this job is

Category Managers are responsible for a specific slice of what an organisation buys or sells. In retail, that might mean owning the snack food aisle or the homewares range. In procurement, it could mean managing all contracts for IT hardware or facilities services. Either way, the core job is the same: analyse what the organisation spends, find the best suppliers or product mix, negotiate contracts, and track performance. The role requires a mix of commercial thinking, supplier relationship skills, and comfort with data. It is not a purely administrative job. Category Managers make real spending decisions and are accountable for the results.
