What this job is
Customer Success Managers are responsible for keeping clients engaged and satisfied once they have signed on with a company. The core of the work is making sure customers understand how to use a product, that their problems get resolved quickly, and that they see enough value to keep renewing their contracts. This is different from a sales role, though the two overlap. A Customer Success Manager is less focused on closing new deals and more focused on protecting and growing existing ones. The role often involves tracking how customers are using a product, spotting early signs of dissatisfaction, and stepping in before a client decides to leave.
