The Career Change Check: a free tool for your clients

Built on 10,257,180 recorded moves between jobs in Australia, 2011-12 to 2020-21, from Jobs and Skills Australia.

Try the check yourself

What it does

Your client types the job they have now and picks a few tasks from a normal week. The check shows the Australian jobs that people from that kind of work most often moved into, read from government data, and two more lists: jobs that fit what they do in a normal week, and jobs in demand that are within reach. For each job it lists the skills the job needs, with the ones their work already covers ticked.

What it does not do

It does not promise a job, and it does not predict who will be replaced by AI. It does not look at individual job ads, employers or vacancies near your client. It is not career counselling, and it does not replace the advice you give.

The data behind it

  • Where people moved: Jobs and Skills Australia, Data on Occupation Mobility: Unpacking Workers Movements (30 January 2024), covering 2011-12 to 2020-21.
  • Shortage: Jobs and Skills Australia, Occupation Shortage List 2025.
  • How often each job is advertised over time: Jobs and Skills Australia, Internet Vacancy Index.
  • Skills lists: Changing Careers, mostly built from the ESCO skills classification, with the rest written by Changing Careers and reviewed by a career coach. Each result names which.

How each figure is worked out is on our methodology page.

The mover data is free to download as a CSV from our open data page.

Free, with no referral fee

The check is free for your clients. There is no referral fee and no commission, and you do not need to sign up. If a client chooses to, they can buy our 12-week Sprint for A$299. Nobody is paid for sending them, including you.

What we collect from your clients

  • The full check asks for a job title and a few tasks. We save these with the result so your client can come back to it.
  • We also save which page they started from and any campaign tag in the link, so we know where people find the check.
  • To see the result, your client gives an email address. That creates a free account, emails them a link to their result, and signs them up for four short emails over two weeks about changing careers and our paid Sprint. Each email has an unsubscribe link.
  • We count each step of the form with a random code, not a name or email, so we can see where people stop.
  • To stop abuse, our rate limiter keeps their internet address for about an hour. Like most websites, our hosting provider also keeps short-term request logs.
  • If a page breaks, an error report goes to our error tracker, Sentry, with names, email addresses and cookies stripped out.
  • The jobs people from their kind of work moved into come straight from the government data above. On the result page, an AI model also helps sort two more lists of jobs, using the job they picked and the skills their tasks point to. It is not sent their email address.
  • The embedded version on your site sends us only what they type in the job box, to find the match. It asks for no email, sets no cookies and saves no result. The rate limit above applies to it too.

Our full privacy policy is on our legal page.

Put the check on your own site

The embedded version asks for a job title and nothing else. It asks for no email, sets no cookies and saves no result.

Accessibility

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We check this page and the embedded check with an automated tool before each change ships. Automated tools find some problems, not all of them, and we have not yet had the check tested by people who use screen readers or other assistive technology. These are the gaps we know about:

  • The printable handout is a PDF without tags, so a screen reader may read it out of order. What it says is also covered on this page.
  • The embedded check sits in a frame with a fixed height, so on a small phone you may need to scroll inside it.

If something on this page or in the check does not work for you, email hello@changingcareers.com.au and tell us what happened. We will reply within one working day.
