Which Australian jobs are most at risk?

AI is not replacing all jobs equally. The roles most affected share a common pattern: a high proportion of routine, structured, repeatable tasks. In the Australian office and service sector, these roles are on the front line.

Each figure below is the occupation group's automation exposure score out of 100, according to Jobs and Skills Australia, Our Gen AI Transition (2025). We call a score of 60 or more high exposure and 40 to 59 medium.

High exposure roles

These occupation groups score 60 or more:

  • Call centre operators: scripted responses, ticket routing, case logging. Score: 75 out of 100 (Call or Contact Centre Workers)

  • General clerks: filing, document preparation, routine correspondence. Score: 71 out of 100

  • Bookkeepers: transaction processing is automatable, but advisory work is not. Score: 69 out of 100

  • Receptionists: scheduling is automatable, but in-person presence is not. Score: 66 out of 100

Medium exposure roles

This occupation group scores between 40 and 59:

  • Customer service managers: reporting is automatable, but coaching and culture-building are not. Score: 53 out of 100 (Call, Contact Centre and Customer Service Managers)

Other roles with routine tasks

These roles also carry routine, repeatable tasks:

  • Data entry operators: form keying, validation, record updates

  • Inquiry clerks: standard information provision, call routing

  • Customer service representatives: FAQ handling, order processing, account updates

  • Office administrators: reporting and procurement are automatable, but team coordination is not

  • Personal assistants: calendar and travel booking are automatable, but judgement and gatekeeping are not

What the research says

The Australian Government's Jobs and Skills Australia reports that roles centred on cognitive routine tasks face the highest displacement risk, while those requiring interpersonal skills, physical adaptability, and situational judgement face the lowest.
