Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need to complete a 5-year accredited degree, then gain supervised work experience and pass the Architectural Practice Examination before you can register. Career changers often start entry-level despite prior experience. The work is detail-heavy and compliance-driven: designs must satisfy the National Construction Code, Australian Standards, local planning rules, and client budgets simultaneously. You're also responsible if something goes wrong on site, which is why professional indemnity insurance is non-negotiable and expensive.

Where the jobs are

Practically speaking, most architecture firms are metro-based. Regional work exists but is sporadic and often project-dependent. Remote work is limited because site visits and client meetings are essential. Government agencies and large construction companies employ architects, but private practices still dominate the sector.
