Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need a science degree and likely postgraduate qualifications to compete, which takes years and money upfront. The work is repetitive lab testing with long waits for results, and career progression often means moving away from hands-on science into management. Pay is modest compared to the education investment required.

Where the jobs are

Most roles are in pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, and government labs rather than remote work. Regional opportunities exist in agricultural biotechnology but are limited. Check state health and research institution job boards.
