Day-to-day

Measure building cavities and cut insulation materials such as polyester batts, glass wool, or rigid foam boards to required dimensions using hand saws, utility knives, or power cutters. Install batts and blankets into wall frames, between floor joists, and roof rafters, securing them with staples, adhesive, or friction fit according to specifications. Apply spray foam insulation using portable spray equipment, controlling pressure and coverage to fill cavities and seal gaps around service penetrations. Install rigid insulation boards on external walls, roofs, or foundations using mechanical fixings or adhesive, ensuring proper alignment and joint treatment. Inspect cavity depth, moisture barriers, and existing services (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) before installation to prevent damage and ensure safe placement. Install protective barriers and fire-rated materials around insulation in compliance with National Construction Code and fire safety regulations. Use thermal imaging or moisture meters to identify cold bridging, air leaks, or moisture problems and determine insulation placement accordingly. Operate powered equipment including nail guns, spray foam rigs, and angle grinders while maintaining Safe Work Australia compliance and wearing appropriate PPE.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically demanding and repetitive, especially spray foam application which involves working overhead in confined spaces with chemical fumes despite PPE. You'll deal with itchy materials like glass wool regularly, and the job has a low ceiling for pay growth compared to other trades. Automation of spray equipment is also quietly improving, which could reduce demand over time.

Where the jobs are

Most work is in major metros where new residential construction and renovations are concentrated. Work follows the building cycle, so demand drops during economic slowdowns. Practically, regional areas have fewer opportunities unless you're willing to travel for large commercial projects.
