Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically demanding and monotonous: you'll spend shifts monitoring the same equipment doing repetitive tasks in noisy, dusty environments. Pay tops out quickly without moving into supervisory roles. Shift work including nights and weekends is standard. Dust exposure and repetitive strain injuries are real occupational health risks you'll need to manage over a long career.

Where the jobs are

In reality, jobs concentrate in regional areas: inland grain handling zones, coal regions, iron ore and mineral processing, and quarries and ports. Some work exists in regional centres, but less so in truly remote areas.

Pay

A$2,019 a week
