Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The pay ceiling is real and low. Even as a supervisor managing staff and budgets, you won't earn significantly more than tradespeople or office workers. You'll also deal with understaffing constantly: cleaning staff turnover is high, so you'll spend a lot of time training people who leave, and covering shifts yourself when others don't show up.

Where the jobs are

Jobs concentrate in capital cities and major regional centres where hotels, hospitals, and aged care facilities cluster. Regional areas have fewer roles but less competition. Practicality: you need to be near large facilities, so metro or established regional towns. Remote work doesn't exist in this role.
