What this role asks for
Bachelor degree or higher (ABS skill level 1)
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll spend more time managing complaints, paperwork and staff disputes than doing actual police work. Career changers often find the bureaucracy heavy: every decision gets scrutinised by oversight bodies, and you're liable if your officers breach conduct codes. The emotional toll of investigating officer misconduct and managing difficult personnel decisions can wear you down.
Where the jobs are
In practice, most positions are in major metro areas where police services are larger. Regional areas have fewer commissioned ranks, so opportunities are limited outside cities. All positions are based in a physical station or district office: remote work isn't an option in policing.
