Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is highly reactive and risk-averse: one mistake with a foreign exchange hedge or covenant breach can cost hundreds of thousands. You need continuous upskilling in complex financial instruments and regulations, and if interest rates spike or markets crash, you're managing crises under pressure with little room for error.
Where the jobs are
In practice, work concentrates in CBD financial districts and is rarely remote due to need for quick decision-making and banking relationships. Many positions require relocation to a capital city.
