Day-to-day
Assess student dance ability, physical limitations, and learning goals during initial consultation to establish individualised lesson content and progression pathways. Demonstrate dance movements, steps, and choreography using correct technique and full-body articulation specific to the chosen dance style. Correct student posture, alignment, and movement quality using visual, verbal, and tactile cuing methods appropriate to the student's age and experience level. Design and structure lesson plans that progressively build technical skills, flexibility, strength, and performance confidence over weeks or months. Teach rhythm recognition and musical interpretation by counting beats, identifying tempo changes, and cueing students to move in synchronisation with music. Choreograph original sequences or teach existing routines adapted to suit the student's ability level and performance timeline. Record lesson content, student progress notes, and areas for improvement in a lesson journal or digital system to inform future sessions. Provide feedback on performance aspects including timing, expression, physicality, and audience presence before recitals or competitions.

Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Your income is completely unpredictable and depends entirely on how many students you can attract and keep paying. You'll spend time marketing yourself, chasing late cancellations, and dealing with students who drop out. Most private tutors earn well below a school teacher's salary, and there's no job security, paid leave, or superannuation unless you build it in yourself.
Where the jobs are
In reality, work concentrates in capital cities and affluent suburbs where families can afford private lessons. Regional Australia and outer suburbs have far fewer opportunities. Most tutors work from private studios or travel to client homes, and remote online lessons have grown but don't suit all dance styles.
Pay
