Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll face on-call roster work including nights and weekends when databases fail or need urgent maintenance. Cloud platforms like AWS and Azure are replacing traditional on-premises roles, so you need continuous reskilling or risk obsolescence. The learning curve is steep: you need solid Linux and Windows fundamentals plus specific database platforms before employers trust you with live systems.

Where the jobs are

Outside capital cities, jobs exist mainly in regional government offices and larger regional hospitals. Remote work is increasingly common for mid-level and senior DAs, but junior roles usually require on-site presence for hands-on training and incident response.
