Day-to-day
Take precise measurements of clients using measuring tape and record dimensions for pattern adjustment or garment construction. Consult with clients to understand fit preferences, style requirements, and design modifications for existing or new garments. Analyse fabric properties including weight, stretch, weave, and grain to determine appropriate cutting and sewing techniques. Cut pattern pieces from fabric using scissors, rotary cutters, or pattern templates, accounting for seam allowances and fabric grain. Operate domestic and industrial sewing machines to construct seams, attach linings, insert zips, and apply edging or trimmings. Perform hand sewing tasks including finishing hems, sewing buttons, attaching hooks and eyes, and completing intricate detail work. Alter garments by taking in or letting out seams, adjusting hem lengths, repositioning darts, and modifying waistbands or necklines. Press garments using steam irons and pressing equipment to set seams, shape darts, and achieve a professional finish.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is physically demanding with repetitive strain on your hands, wrists, and eyes from detailed sewing. Most jobs are in alteration and repairs rather than bespoke creation, which can feel monotonous. Pay is typically modest and often based on piecework, so your income depends on how fast you work. Fast fashion has reduced demand for tailoring.
Where the jobs are
In reality, most jobs concentrate in capital city suburbs and shopping centres where dry cleaners and alterations shops operate. Some work exists in regional towns, but it's sparse. Independent workshop businesses are common, meaning you'd need to build your own client base or find established shops willing to employ you. Remote work isn't an option.
