Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically repetitive and the pay ceiling is low. You'll spend hours on your feet chopping, washing, and cleaning in a hot kitchen with minimal progression unless you train as a chef. Many positions are part-time or casual, so hours and income can be unreliable. It's also medium automation risk as prep equipment improves.

Where the jobs are

In practice, jobs concentrate in major cities where there's higher demand from hotels, restaurants, and catering companies. Regional areas have fewer positions. Some institutional work (hospitals, schools, aged care) exists nationwide but is typically lower-paid. Remote work isn't an option in this role.
