Day-to-day

Grade patterns across size ranges using CAD software (Gerber, Lectra) or manual grading techniques to maintain consistency in fit and proportions. Create and fit test garment prototypes on dress forms and fit models to identify construction issues, seam placement, and silhouette problems. Analyse fabric properties including weight, stretch, shrinkage, and drape to assess suitability for garment designs and make fibre content recommendations. Prepare technical specifications including stitch types, seam allowances, hem depths, and button placement for production teams and factories. Conduct wash and wear tests on sample garments to determine shrinkage, colour fastness, and fabric stability in accordance with AS/NZS standards. Liaise with pattern makers to modify designs based on fit feedback, production constraints, and cost reduction requirements. Review production samples against approved specifications to identify defects in construction, pressing, and finishing before dispatch. Document tolerance ranges and quality standards for seam strength, buttonhole placement, and hem widths using measurement tools and visual assessment.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Australia's clothing manufacturing has shrunk drastically. Most brands now outsource to Asia, so local jobs are rare and often involve remote quality control rather than hands-on prototyping. You'll be competing for scarce positions, likely in smaller specialist producers or import quality teams, with pay capped lower than comparable design roles because the industry itself is contracting here.

Where the jobs are

Regional opportunities are extremely limited. Remote work is uncommon because the role requires fitting on models and hands-on prototype assessment, though some quality review work can be done offsite.
