Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll be doing physical outdoor work in heat, mud and water year-round, often on farms far from towns. The pay stays low unless you move up to technician level, which requires extra qualifications. Automation of watering systems and water restrictions in drought years also threaten job security.

Where the jobs are

Most jobs are in regional areas rather than cities. Some landscape maintenance work exists in metro areas, but farm and horticulture roles require living rurally.
