Day-to-day
Operate computerised control systems and distributed control system (DCS) panels to manage pulp digesters, paper machines, and bleaching sequences. Monitor real-time process parameters including pH, temperature, pressure, and flow rates using plant instrumentation and adjust setpoints to maintain specification. Perform daily checks on machinery including bearing temperatures, vibration levels, and hydraulic pressures using gauges and portable monitoring equipment. Clear pulp screen blockages, replace worn felts and synthetic fabrics on paper machines, and clean wet-end equipment to prevent production stoppages. Coordinate with shift supervisor and quality control to adjust machine speeds, consistency levels, and chemical dosing in response to production targets and test results. Respond to equipment alarms and faults by diagnosing problems, isolating affected machinery sections, and performing basic troubleshooting or escalating to maintenance teams. Record production data including tonnage produced, downtime incidents, chemical consumption, and environmental discharge readings in plant management information systems. Assist in pulp mill operations such as wood chip handling, digester loading, and cooking liquor preparation under supervision of senior operators.

Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The industry is shrinking in Australia. Mills are closing or automating, so job security is weak even when you land a role. You'll also work rotating shifts including nights and weekends, which messes with your sleep and social life. Pay tops out quickly without moving into supervision or maintenance.
Where the jobs are
Remote work doesn't apply. Jobs are regional, not metro, so relocation may be needed.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 7113, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
