Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Income is unpredictable and often low, especially starting out. You'll compete with phone cameras and amateur competitors undercutting prices. Building a client base takes years. Many photographers do weddings and events on weekends and evenings. Equipment costs are high upfront, and you're constantly investing in new gear to stay competitive.
Where the jobs are
Regional areas have fewer opportunities. Most work is freelance or small studio-based rather than traditional employment. Remote work is limited since you need to be on location for shoots, though editing can happen anywhere with internet.
Pay
