Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The jump to becoming a licensed plumber requires completing an apprenticeship (usually 4 years), so you're looking at low pay for a long time. The work is also physically demanding: hauling heavy pipes, working in confined spaces, and dealing with sewage and blocked drains. Some days are genuinely unpleasant.
Where the jobs are
Regional and rural areas need plumbers but have fewer assistant positions. Most work is on-site at building locations, not remote. Jobs depend on construction activity and housing renovation cycles, so they can dry up during economic downturns.
