Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll be doing a lot of routine testing and paperwork that doesn't change much day to day. The job is heavily documentation-focused, so if you like variety and problem-solving, this can feel repetitive. Pay is modest for the responsibility you carry (you're the gate-keeper stopping contaminated food reaching consumers), and there's real pressure when test results don't match expectations. Shift work at processing facilities is common, especially during harvest.

Where the jobs are

Realistically most opportunities are in regions, not major cities. Remote work is rare. Jobs follow harvest seasons and export demand.

Pay

A$1,330 a week
