Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need to accept a rigid hierarchy and lose workplace autonomy. Career changers struggle with the strict chain of command, limited flexibility in how you approach problems, and the fact that you're responsible for people's safety and discipline in high-stress situations. The pay ceiling is real: SNCOs earn less than equivalent civilian management roles, and deployment can mean months away from family with little notice.

Where the jobs are

Rural postings exist but are fewer. Most positions require relocation: remote work isn't an option in operational military roles.
