Day-to-day

Interpret technical drawings and specifications to determine sign dimensions, mounting heights, and structural load requirements. Select and prepare mounting substrates including brick, timber, steel, and aluminium using appropriate anchors, brackets, and fasteners. Operate power tools such as drills, angle grinders, and saws to cut, shape, and prepare sign components and mounting materials. Install signage at height using ladders, scaffolding, or elevated work platforms while adhering to Safe Work Australia fall prevention guidelines. Align and level signs using laser levels and spirit levels to ensure visual accuracy and compliance with design specifications. Secure signs using appropriate fixing methods including bolts, rivets, adhesives, and mechanical fasteners suitable for substrate type and load. Conduct pre-installation site inspections to assess structural suitability, electrical hazards, and traffic management requirements. Test electrical connections for illuminated signs and verify compliance with Australian electrical standards before handover.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend a lot of time working at height on ladders and scaffolding, which carries real injury risk even with safety gear. The work is physically demanding and repetitive. Pay isn't high compared to other trades, and there's no clear pathway to earn significantly more without moving into management or starting your own business.

Where the jobs are

Practically speaking, work concentrates in major metro areas where there's more commercial and retail development. Regional centres have fewer opportunities. Work is mostly on-site, not remote.
