Day-to-day
Assess student speaking ability, voice quality, and dramatic potential through initial consultations and ongoing observation to establish baseline proficiency and learning objectives. Design individualised lesson plans targeting specific areas such as articulation, breath control, emotional expression, character development, and stage movement based on student level and goals. Coach students in techniques for clarity of speech, vocal projection, and pace variation appropriate to character and dramatic context. Guide students through interpretation of dramatic texts including monologues, scenes, and scripts by discussing subtext, motivation, and character objectives. Provide feedback on performance using terminology from drama pedagogy, addressing posture, gesture, facial expression, and emotional authenticity. Prepare students for external examinations such as AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) Speech and Drama grades, delivering content aligned to syllabus requirements. Advise students auditioning for drama schools, university programmes, or performance roles by coaching audition pieces and building confidence. Maintain detailed records of student progress, attendance, and achievement of learning outcomes to track development and inform future lesson planning.

Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Income is unpredictable and capped by student numbers. You're self-employed, so you absorb all costs: studio rental, materials, tax. Demand often follows school terms, so school holidays can leave gaps. Building a client base takes years. Many tutors earn less than they would in a school, and there's no superannuation unless you set it up yourself.
Where the jobs are
Regional areas have far fewer opportunities. Most work is face-to-face, though some post-covid tutors offer online lessons. You need to build your own client base through referrals, local networks, and advertising.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 2492, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
