Survey Interviewer
Survey interviewers collect information from members of the public on behalf of research organisations, government agencies, and market research firms. The work involves asking structured questions and recording responses accurately. It is often part-time or project-based, which suits people looking for flexible entry-level work.
What this job is
A survey interviewer contacts people, either in person, by phone, or online, and guides them through a set of prepared questions. The goal is to gather reliable data for a specific research purpose, such as a government census, a public health study, or a consumer opinion poll. The interviewer does not analyse the data. Their job is to ask questions clearly, record answers faithfully, and meet response targets set by the project team.

Day-to-day
A typical day could involve calling a list of households to complete a telephone survey, visiting addresses in a designated area to conduct face-to-face interviews, or working through an online platform to log responses. The interviewer follows a script closely, handles refusals politely, and submits completed records to a supervisor. Admin tasks such as updating call logs and flagging incomplete responses are also part of the routine.

Requirements
The standard entry point is completion of Year 12 (JSA Occupation Profile). No formal tertiary qualification is typically required. Employers generally look for clear verbal communication, the ability to follow instructions precisely, and comfort working with a script. Experience in customer service, retail, or call centres is often seen as relevant background. For course options, yourcareer.gov.au lists short programs in business administration and communication that could support an application.
The honest hard part
The real challenge of this role is its irregular nature. Work tends to come in bursts tied to specific research projects, so income can be inconsistent. Rejection is a daily reality, as many people decline to participate in surveys, and maintaining a professional manner through repeated refusals takes patience. The work is closely scripted, which limits creative input, and career progression within the occupation itself is limited. People who move into survey interviewing as a stepping stone often find it useful for building communication skills, but those seeking long-term stability may need to look at adjacent roles in data collection, market research coordination, or community engagement.
Where the jobs are
In practice, roles tend to cluster where research organisations and government statistical agencies operate, which often means capital cities. Remote and regional work may arise during large national data-collection projects.
