Day-to-day

Operate electronic weighbridge systems to weigh loaded and unloaded vehicles, recording gross and net weights. Verify vehicle weights comply with Heavy Vehicle National Law mass limits and axle load limits. Issue printed weight tickets or dockets with vehicle registration, weight data, date, and operator identification. Reconcile weight records with goods receipts and dispatch documentation to ensure accuracy. Conduct pre-shift checks on weighbridge calibration, display screens, and indicator lights. Report weighbridge malfunctions or calibration drift to maintenance personnel and cease operations if equipment is unsafe. Inspect vehicles for damage, load security, and compliance with dangerous goods labelling before or after weighing. Direct vehicle drivers to correct positioning on weighbridge platforms and signal when weighing is complete.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is repetitive and monotonous. You'll spend most shifts standing in a booth or cabin, directing trucks onto scales and entering data. Pay stays low without moving into supervision or transport management. Weather exposure, noise, and shift work including early starts are common. Most positions don't lead anywhere unless you're keen to retrain.

Where the jobs are

These jobs are concentrated in regional and outer-metro areas near quarries, ports, logistics hubs, and heavy industries. Work is rarely available in inner city areas and remote work isn't an option.
