Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. The honest hard part
This role faces real automation risk from AI transcription tools and document management software that's getting better every year. Pay growth is often limited, with few advancement paths. The work is repetitive and detail-focused: one typo or formatting mistake can ripple through official documents. You're also at the mercy of other people's deadlines and disorganisation.
Where the jobs are
In reality, jobs concentrate in capital cities in corporate offices, government departments, legal firms, and universities. Regional areas have fewer positions. Remote work exists but is less common than general office roles because organisations still need in-person support for document handover and archiving.
