Free TAFE NSW 2026: which courses are free and who qualifies.

The full list of fee-free TAFE courses in NSW for 2026, who is eligible, and how to enrol.

What it is.

Free TAFE NSW is the NSW Government's program that covers tuition fees for selected courses at TAFE NSW campuses. The program targets qualifications in industries with skills shortages. For 2026, the list includes courses relevant to the focus area pathways: Certificate IV in Disability (CHC43121), Certificate IV in Mental Health (CHC43315), Certificate IV in Community Services (CHC42015), Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33021), Certificate IV in Business (BSB40120), and Diploma of Practice Management (HLT57715). The full list is updated each year when the NSW Budget is handed down.

Who qualifies.

You are eligible if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, an NSW resident, aged 15 or over, and not enrolled in school. Priority is given to people who do not already hold a qualification at the same or higher level. Some courses have additional entry requirements (e.g. a current first aid certificate or NDIS Worker Screening Check). Check the specific course page on the TAFE NSW website for details.

How to apply.

Go to tafensw.edu.au. Search for the course you want. Check that it is listed as fee-free. Click Apply and follow the enrolment steps. You will need your USI (Unique Student Identifier), which you can create at usi.gov.au if you do not have one. Enrolment opens throughout the year for most courses. Some courses have specific intake dates.

Limits and gotchas.

Free TAFE covers tuition fees only. You may still need to pay for textbooks, uniforms, equipment, or placement costs. Not every campus offers every course. Online delivery is available for some qualifications but not all. Places are limited and fill quickly for popular courses (especially CHC43121 Disability and CHC33021 Individual Support). Apply early. The fee-free list changes each year based on the NSW Budget. Verify the current list at education.nsw.gov.au before enrolling.
