Jobs and Skills Australia: what the data tells you about your career.
How to use Jobs and Skills Australia data to understand which occupations are growing, declining, or in shortage.
What it is.
Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) is the Australian Government body that publishes labour market data, employment projections, and occupation shortage lists. It replaced the National Skills Commission in 2022. JSA publishes 5 and 10 year employment projections by occupation and industry, the Occupation Shortage List (which occupations employers struggle to fill), and the Skills Priority List (which qualifications are in demand). This data is free, public, and updated annually.

Who qualifies.
Anyone can access JSA data. It is public research, not a service you apply for. Workers, career counsellors, training providers, and employers all use it. The data is especially useful if you are choosing between career pathways and want to know which roles are growing and which are shrinking.
How to apply.
Go to jobsandskills.gov.au. The main sections are Employment Projections (which occupations will grow or decline over 5 and 10 years), Occupation Shortage Report (which roles employers cannot fill), and Occupation and Industry Profiles (detailed data on specific occupations including employment count, salary, and education requirements). You can also use the Job Outlook tool at joboutlook.gov.au to search by occupation name.
Limits and gotchas.
JSA projections are based on existing economic trends and do not currently reflect the impact of generative AI on the labour market. That means the projections for clerical and administrative roles may understate the actual decline, and projections for emerging roles may understate the actual growth. Use JSA data as one input, not the only input, when making career decisions. The Occupation Shortage List reflects employer recruitment difficulty, not job quality or pay.
Where this fits in your plan.
JSA data tells you where the jobs are going. The five pathway families we track (customer success, claims, NDIS coordination, health admin, operations coordination) are all in stable or growing occupation categories according to JSA projections. If you want to see how your current role compares, take the free Career Change Check at /assessment. In the Sprint, every role carries JSA and ABS figures, each line naming the body that published it.
