The problem with call centre resumes

Most call centre resumes read like a job description, not a record of judgement and outcomes. Recruiters scanning for the next role they want to fill, customer success, claims, NDIS coordination, health admin, are looking for evidence of how you handle ambiguity and stay with the customer when the script runs out. Bullets like "answered customer queries" do not show that.

The fix is not creative writing. It is honest translation. Take the work you actually did and reposition it in the language of the next role.

A typical before and after

Before:

Answered inbound customer calls and resolved queries within service levels.

After:

Resolved customer queries with the kind of judgement and process discipline that customer success teams rely on, particularly on contested account changes and refunds.

The "after" line does not invent anything. It names the cross-team thinking that the original line buried.

Five rewrite rules that work in Australia

  1. Lead with the next role, not the old one. The first three words of every bullet should sound at home in the job ad you are applying to. If the ad says "stakeholder engagement", your bullet should not say "answered calls".
  2. Drop hype. "Synergy", "rockstar", "dynamic team player", and anything you would not say out loud in an interview do not belong here. Recruiters now actively filter for these.
  3. Quantify only where you really have the numbers. Inventing a percentage is a fast way to get caught out at interview. If you have CSAT or quality scores, use them. If you do not, write the bullet without a number.
  4. Mirror two or three keywords from each job ad. ATS systems still rank by keyword overlap. Two or three from the actual ad you are applying to is enough.
  5. No em-dashes anywhere. Use commas, full stops, parentheses, colons. The em-dash is a frequent AI tell and Australian recruiters notice.

What to do this week

Pick one job ad for the role you want. Print it. Highlight every keyword that appears more than once. Now look at your current resume. Where are those keywords? If they are not there, the AI scan and the recruiter both see a generic call centre worker. The fix is twenty minutes of rewriting, not a six-month course.
