A day in the life of a Customer Success Manager in Australia.
What a CSM actually does, hour by hour, in an Australian SaaS company. Sourced from a real AU practitioner.
Interviewed an AU Customer Success Manager in NSW, May 2026.
Who I interviewed.
A Customer Success Manager at a mid-size SaaS company in Sydney. Three years in the role, previously in a call centre for a telco. Manages a book of 45 SMB accounts.
The morning.
Starts at 8:30. Checks the health dashboard in Gainsight for any accounts that went quiet overnight. Three accounts flagged amber: one has not logged in for 10 days, one raised a support ticket about onboarding, one is coming up for renewal next month. Writes a check-in email for the quiet account. Calls the onboarding one to walk through the setup. Adds a note for the renewal account to prep the QBR deck this afternoon. Two back-to-back calls with existing customers: one is a monthly check-in, the other is troubleshooting a workflow that broke after a product update. Both calls are 20 minutes. She listens more than she talks.
Midday.
Lunch at the desk (leftover pasta). Quick internal sync with the sales team about a new customer handover coming this week. Reviews the handover notes. Flags two gaps: the customer's success criteria were not documented, and the onboarding timeline is unclear. Sends the AE a message asking for both before the kickoff call.
The afternoon.
Builds the QBR deck for the renewal account. Pulls usage data, highlights wins (they reduced ticket volume by 30% since onboarding), flags one risk (a power user left the company). Rehearses the deck once. Sends a prep email to the customer's GM with the agenda. Last hour: updates CRM notes for every account she touched today. Flags one expansion opportunity (a customer mentioned they are opening a second office). Logs off at 5:15.
What surprised me.
The job is 70% listening and 20% admin. The remaining 10% is the bit that matters most: noticing a signal in the data before the customer raises it. She said the hardest part is not the product knowledge. It is resisting the urge to pitch when the customer just wants to be heard.
