Day-to-day
Lay out pattern templates on folded fabric layers according to marker plans to minimise waste and maximise yield. Mark cutting lines on fabric using chalk, pencils, or automated marking systems based on pattern specifications. Operate industrial cutting machines including band knives, straight knives, or reciprocating cutters to cut fabric pieces to pattern specifications. Stack and separate cut fabric pieces by size, colour, or garment component for handoff to sewing departments. Inspect cut pieces for defects, misalignment, or damage and remove or segregate defective pieces. Check cutting accuracy against pattern specifications using rulers, measuring tapes, or digital callippers. Maintain cutting equipment by replacing dull blades, performing routine cleaning, and reporting mechanical faults. Adjust cutting machine settings such as blade height, pressure, and speed based on fabric weight and fibre type.

What this role asks for
Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3)
Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Australia's clothing manufacturing has shrunk dramatically: most fabric cutting now happens overseas where labour is cheaper. Even in remaining factories, the work is physically repetitive, the pay is modest, and automation (laser cutters and digital systems) may gradually reduce the need for manual cutters. You're retraining for a shrinking industry.
Where the jobs are
Most work is factory-based with set shifts. Genuine manufacturing jobs here are limited and scattered: you'd need to actively search factories directly rather than expect broad opportunities across Australia.
