Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Most authors don't make a living wage from writing alone. You'll likely need a second income source (teaching, freelancing, day job) for years or indefinitely. Publishing contracts often pay small advances that take months to earn out, and royalties can be tiny. You're competing against thousands of other writers for publisher attention.

Where the jobs are

Most authors today mix traditional publishing with self-publishing, freelance writing, and online platforms, which you can do from anywhere in Australia. Remote collaboration with editors and publishers is standard.
