Requirements

The honest hard part
Pay is low and freelance work is unstable. Most positions are casual or contract-based with irregular hours and income. You'll spend months on a manuscript that earns you a few hundred dollars, competing against AI tools that can now do basic editing. Full-time permanent roles are rare.
Where the jobs are
Most editing work is freelance and location-independent, so you can live anywhere but need to network heavily in Australian publishing circles online and at industry events to find consistent work.
