Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Pay is low compared to other professions requiring similar qualification levels, and won't jump significantly even as a room leader. You'll spend your day managing physical demands (lifting, bending, cleaning) alongside emotional labour dealing with upset children and sometimes difficult parents. Burnout is real in this sector.

Where the jobs are

Jobs concentrate in metro areas and suburban centres where families with young children live and work. Regional and remote areas have fewer services. Most roles are centre-based, not remote. The sector is split between for-profit chains, not-for-profit organisations, and government-funded services.

Pay

A$1,341 a week
