Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You need land or significant capital to buy in, and you're entirely exposed to commodity price swings and weather you can't control. A bad season wipes out your year's income. You're also locked into seasonal 60 to 80 hour weeks during planting and harvest, with financial pressure making it hard to take time off.
Where the jobs are
Most growers own or lease their land rather than work as hired managers, so opportunities come through farm ownership, partnership, or contract growing arrangements rather than traditional job listings.
