Day-to-day

Cut canvas and heavy textile materials to pattern using scissors, rotary cutters, and cutting tables, ensuring accurate dimensions and minimal waste. Operate industrial sewing machines to stitch seams, hems, and attachments on canvas goods, adjusting tension and thread for different material weights. Measure and mark cutting lines on fabric using measuring tapes, rulers, and marking tools to ensure pattern accuracy. Hand-stitch reinforced areas, edges, and specialist seams using needles and thread where industrial machines cannot reach or where additional strength is required. Inspect finished products for defects in stitching, alignment, and material quality against customer specifications. Prepare canvas by treating or pre-shrinking material as required before cutting to prevent dimensional changes in finished goods. Assemble component parts such as straps, handles, buckles, and fittings onto canvas goods using appropriate fastening methods. Apply waterproofing treatments, dyes, or protective coatings to canvas goods as specified in production requirements.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is repetitive and physically demanding. You'll spend hours at industrial sewing machines in a workshop, doing the same cuts and seams day after day. Your wrists, shoulders, and eyes take a beating. Pay is modest and unlikely to climb much higher even with experience. Automation is creeping in too, so custom or niche work may be safer than mass production roles.

Where the jobs are

Some regional work exists in areas with boat-building or agricultural equipment industries. Remote work is not an option for this hands-on trade.
