Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll likely stay in entry-level roles unless you get a Certificate III or higher qualification. The work involves toxic chemicals and hazardous conditions, so you need to follow strict safety rules or risk serious injury or illness. Shift work including nights and weekends is common. Pay is modest for the risk involved.

Where the jobs are

Job availability depends heavily on where chemical plants are operating. Remote work is not an option. Some regional areas have stronger opportunities than capital cities.
