Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need 10 to 15 years in security roles before companies trust you at this level. The certification pathway is brutal: CISSP, CISM, or equivalent takes 18 months minimum alongside full-time work. You're on-call during breaches (3am incidents happen). Some people find the pay does not match the stress. Career changers from unrelated fields struggle most.
Where the jobs are
Practically: most roles cluster in CBD areas where big corporates and banks are. Government agencies (Defence, Treasury) have dedicated positions. Remote work exists but rare: companies want you onsite during crises. Regional Australia has almost none.
Pay
