Advertising Specialist
Advertising Specialists plan and create paid promotional campaigns for products, services, and brands. The role sits inside agencies, media companies, and in-house marketing teams across Australia.
What this job is
An Advertising Specialist develops and manages campaigns that connect a brand with its target audience. The work covers writing briefs, selecting media channels, coordinating creative teams, and measuring whether a campaign achieved its goals. Some specialists focus on digital channels such as search and social media. Others concentrate on traditional formats like print, outdoor, or broadcast. Many do a mix of both. The role requires a clear understanding of consumer behaviour, media buying, and brand positioning.

Day-to-day
A typical day might include reviewing campaign performance data, meeting with a client or internal stakeholder to discuss objectives, briefing a copywriter or designer, and checking that ad placements are running correctly. Budget tracking is a regular task, as is preparing reports that show what the numbers mean in plain terms. Deadlines are frequent, and priorities can shift when a campaign underperforms or a client changes direction.

Requirements
A bachelor degree is the typical entry-level qualification for this occupation (JSA Occupation Profile). Common fields of study include advertising, marketing, communications, and media. Some people enter through related degrees in business or journalism and build advertising skills on the job. Short courses in digital advertising platforms, data analytics, or content strategy may also support a career change into this area. You can search for relevant courses at yourcareer.gov.au or check free and subsidised training options at dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe.
The honest hard part
Advertising is a competitive field where results are visible and measured constantly. Clients and employers can see quickly when a campaign falls short, which creates ongoing pressure to perform. For career changers, the challenge is often demonstrating practical skills rather than just theoretical knowledge. A portfolio of real or speculative campaign work tends to matter as much as a qualification. The industry also shifts quickly as platforms change their algorithms and new channels emerge, so staying current is an ongoing commitment rather than a one-time effort.
