Community Worker
Community Workers support people facing social, personal, or practical difficulties by connecting them with services and providing direct assistance. It is a hands-on role that suits people who want to work directly with individuals and communities rather than in a purely administrative setting.
Screening checks are normally required for NDIS coordination roles.
Some background checks for this sector can take up to eight weeks to process. Some findings can restrict or bar a person from risk-assessed roles in this sector for several years. Factor this into your timeline before applying.

What this job is
A Community Worker helps people navigate difficult circumstances. That might mean assisting someone to access housing support, connecting a family with financial counselling, or working alongside people recovering from illness, addiction, or family breakdown. The role sits between frontline care and case coordination. Community Workers often act as a first point of contact for people who are unsure where to turn. They assess needs, refer people to appropriate services, and sometimes provide direct support themselves. The work happens in community centres, non-profit organisations, local councils, and government agencies.

Day-to-day
A typical day could include meeting with clients to talk through their current situation, completing intake paperwork, making referrals to specialist services, attending team meetings, and following up on previous cases. Some days involve outreach, visiting people in their homes or in community settings. Record-keeping is a consistent part of the role. Community Workers often manage several cases at once, so organisation and clear communication matter. The pace can vary. Some days are steady and planned. Others involve responding to urgent or unexpected needs.

Requirements
The common entry-level qualification for this role is a Certificate IV in Community Services (JSA Occupation Profile). This qualification covers topics such as working with diverse people, responding to client needs, and understanding legal and ethical obligations in community services. Some employers may accept a Diploma of Community Services or equivalent experience, particularly for more senior positions. If you are considering this path, you can search for registered training providers at yourcareer.gov.au. Some Certificate IV programs may be available at reduced or no cost depending on your state or territory. Check dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for current eligibility information.
The honest hard part
Community work can be emotionally demanding. You are often working with people in crisis or in long-term difficult circumstances, and progress can be slow or hard to measure. Caseloads can be heavy, and the gap between what clients need and what services can provide is sometimes significant. Vicarious stress is a real occupational consideration, and not all employers have strong supervision or support structures in place. Pay in this sector is modest relative to the complexity of the work. People who move into this role from other careers sometimes find the adjustment to a slower, relationship-based pace of work takes time. That said, many people find the work meaningful and stay in the sector for the long term.
Where the jobs are
In practice, Community Worker roles tend to exist wherever community services organisations operate, which includes metropolitan areas, regional centres, and some remote communities. Demand is often higher in areas with greater social disadvantage or larger populations of people requiring support services.
