Day-to-day
Operate vibrating or pressing machines to compress concrete mix into moulds for blocks, pavers, or wall panels. Load hoppers and feeders with concrete mix, aggregates, or raw materials according to production recipes and specifications. Monitor machine gauges, pressure indicators, and electronic control panels to maintain correct operating temperatures, vibration frequency, and cycle times. Remove finished concrete products from moulds or extraction equipment and place on curing racks or conveyors. Inspect produced items for surface defects, cracks, dimensional accuracy, and colour consistency using measuring tools and visual assessment. Adjust machine settings such as vibration amplitude, press pressure, or cycle duration to achieve required product specifications. Clean and maintain moulds, pressing plates, and extraction equipment to prevent concrete build-up and ensure consistent product quality. Report machine breakdowns, material shortages, and quality issues to supervisors and complete production logs and shift handover documentation.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is repetitive and physically demanding with little room for progression. You'll be standing at machines for 8-hour shifts doing the same tasks, and pay stays flat unless you move into supervision. Concrete dust exposure is a real health risk long-term, and the machines are loud. Automation is slowly replacing operators in some facilities.
Where the jobs are
Concrete product manufacturing is scattered across metros and regional areas rather than concentrated in one place. Most jobs are in or near major cities where construction demand is highest, plus some in regional areas near quarries and transport hubs. Remote work is not an option.
Pay
