What this job is
A concrete batching plant operator controls and monitors automated or semi-automated machinery that mixes and dispenses concrete to specified designs and quantities. Working on construction sites or in dedicated batching facilities, the operator measures raw materials (cement, aggregates, water, and admixtures), manages the batching and mixing process, and ensures the concrete meets Australian Standard AS 1379 and quality specifications before dispatch to job sites.

Day-to-day
Calibrate scales and measuring devices on the batching plant to ensure precise material quantities according to job specifications and design requirements. Load aggregates, cement, water, and chemical admixtures into the batching plant hopper in correct sequence and proportions. Operate the mixing drum or pan mixer controls to blend materials for the specified dwell time, monitoring consistency and slump values. Test concrete samples using slump cones and other field testing equipment to verify workability and compliance with AS 1379. Record batch data including material quantities, mixing times, ambient temperature, and water content in batch records or digital systems. Communicate job-specific concrete design requirements and delivery schedules with site supervisors, contractors, and concrete truck drivers. Clean and maintain internal drum surfaces and discharge chutes between batch cycles to prevent material buildup and contamination. Adjust water content and admixture dosing in response to ambient conditions, material moisture, and on-site quality feedback.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is repetitive and physically demanding, with long shifts in loud, dusty environments handling heavy materials. Pay caps out early without management qualifications. Automation may reduce the number of operators needed at smaller plants. You'll also face tight deadlines where mistakes delay entire construction sites, creating real pressure.
Where the jobs are
Jobs concentrate around major metros and regional growth areas where construction is active. Batching plants need to be near construction sites, so remote work isn't possible. Most positions are with concrete suppliers, construction firms, and quarrying operations in urban and peri-urban areas.
Pay

This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
