Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll face a long, expensive pathway: a paramedic degree, then years working as a standard paramedic before qualifying for critical care training. Once there, you're on-call for unpredictable emergencies, shift work including nights and weekends, and carrying the weight of life-or-death decisions with limited backup in remote or aeromedical settings. The emotional toll is real, and pay doesn't always match the responsibility.

Where the jobs are

These roles exist mainly in state ambulance services and aeromedical retrieval organisations. Most jobs cluster in metro areas with critical care retrieval units and rural aeromedical bases. Remote work is not an option.
