Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation had trouble finding suitable applicants in regional Australia in 2025, but not in the major cities. Ratings are not the same everywhere. ACT was rated in shortage. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Medication errors, missed infections, or procedural mistakes directly affect patients. The role involves a lot of physical work (lifting, standing 12-hour shifts), exposure to bodily fluids and infectious diseases, and emotional labour with dying or distressed patients. It's regulated work with limited progression without further study.
Where the jobs are
Jobs concentrate in major cities and regional centres with hospitals and aged care facilities. Aged care is increasingly dominated by regional and outer-metro facilities. Remote work is not possible for direct patient care. Practical reality is you need to be near a hospital, aged care home, or community health service.
