Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Your body will take a beating. This is heavy manual labour in all weather: digging, lifting, operating vibrating equipment, and swinging jackhammers. Repetitive strain injuries, back problems, and joint damage are real risks. The work is also weather-dependent, so hours can be unpredictable. Pay tends to be modest unless you progress to equipment operator or supervisor roles.

Where the jobs are

Regional Australia has steady demand because major projects are spread across mining areas. Remote work doesn't apply: you're on-site every day.

Pay
