Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation had trouble finding suitable applicants in regional Australia in 2025, but not in the major cities. Ratings are not the same everywhere. ACT was rated in shortage. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. The honest hard part
Your earning power caps out fairly quickly without moving into supervision or contracting. The work is physically demanding on your body: heavy vibration, dust, heat, and long hours in confined cabs cause back and joint problems. You'll also face irregular work during economic downturns and wet seasons, meaning gaps between jobs.
Where the jobs are
Practically speaking, jobs cluster around major cities and regional mining areas. Remote work doesn't apply. Regional and rural jobs exist but often require FIFO rosters to mines.
