Day-to-day
Conduct comprehensive building energy audits using thermal imaging cameras, power meters, and air leakage testing equipment to identify heat loss and inefficient systems. Measure and record building fabric properties including insulation levels, window performance, air tightness, and thermal bridging to assess envelope performance. Operate and interpret data from building energy management systems and smart metering devices to establish baseline energy consumption patterns. Prepare energy ratings such as NatHERS certificates for homes or NABERS ratings for commercial buildings, in line with national and state requirements. Document findings in detailed energy audit reports with photographs, measurements, and calculations of potential energy savings in kilowatt-hours and dollars. Recommend energy efficiency improvements such as HVAC system upgrades, insulation retrofits, renewable energy installation, and lighting upgrades with cost-benefit analysis. Assess compliance with National Construction Code (NCC) energy efficiency requirements and Australian Standards including AS/NZS 3118 and relevant NABERS rating methodologies. Liaise with building owners, facility managers, and contractors to explain energy assessment findings and prioritise retrofit recommendations.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll need to get certified in your state (usually Certificate III or IV plus specific energy rating qualifications), which takes time and money upfront. The bigger issue: your recommendations only matter if clients can afford to act on them. A lot of your reports end up on shelves. Pay sits below trades without the job security, and automation of energy modelling software may mean fewer assessors are needed over time.
Where the jobs are
Practically, most work concentrates in capital cities and larger regional centres where building compliance audits and retrofit projects cluster. Remote work is limited because you're on-site measuring buildings, though report writing happens in the office.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 3121, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
