Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need a science degree (often with honours) and years of on-the-job training before you're trusted to sign off reports that actually matter. Many career changers hit a glass ceiling because you can't jump straight to senior roles. The work is also heavily project-dependent, so income swings with development cycles, and you may spend months on boring compliance paperwork rather than interesting science.

Where the jobs are

The sector concentrates around consulting firms in CBD areas and government environmental departments. Some roles exist in regional areas (mining, agriculture, water management), but promotion and variety favour the cities. Remote work is possible for report writing but field surveys and site visits lock you to travel requirements.
